What do you do when creativity calls? You answer! That’s exactly the story of our October Artist Highlight Winner, Cass Cooper — founder of Mama Mia Face Painting. Cass found herself longing for a sense of creativity, and when it came knocking, she seized the moment and went all in. Now, face painting is what she does full-time.

“After the world slowed down in 2020, I found myself craving creativity and connection more than ever.”
Prior to face painting, Cass found a creative outlet in her line of work; however, when she became a mom, she wanted to spend more time at home with her family.
“I had spent 15 years working as an award-winning art director in the graphic design world, but once I became a mom, I realized I wanted to reclaim my time — to be more present for my family while still doing something deeply creative.”
In 2022, she unexpectedly discovered another creative outlet.
“During a neighborhood BBQ, I brought out a few paints just for fun… and something magical happened. The kids’ faces lit up, parents started asking for my info, and I felt a spark I hadn’t felt in years.”
After that BBQ, Cass knew she wanted to pursue a full-time career in face painting. Shortly after, she founded Mama Mia Face Painting.
“That day, Mama Mia was born — named after my daughter and the joy she inspires. What started as a small way to bring smiles to our community has grown into a full-service creative entertainment team offering face painting, airbrush tattoos, glitter bars, and more across Orange County and beyond.”

By starting Mama Mia Face Painting, Cass was able to combine everything she loves — just as she had hoped to do back in 2020.
“Now, I get to combine everything I love — art, imagination, and joyful connection — in every event I’m part of. Every brushstroke is a little moment of magic.”
We asked Cass to share a piece of advice for aspiring face painters who are just starting out, and here’s what she had to say:
“Connect with other local artists. Build community, not competition — it will take you so much further. There’s room for all of us.”
“And don’t be afraid to invest in your brand. If something elevates your look or experience, it’s worth it. Ask yourself, ‘How many gigs would this take to pay off?’ If the answer is one or two, that’s an investment in you.”

She ends with this,
“Keep growing, keep learning, and remember — you don’t have to be perfect to be passionate.”
